The School of Mechanical Engineering, formerly known as the Mechanical Department of Tianjin University of Light Industry, was one of the three departments when it was founded in 1958.

There are more than 110 full-time teachers, 70% of senior titles, 1 national expert, 10 provincial and ministerial talents, 2 teachers included in ESI top 2% list.

It has two master degrees in mechanical engineering and machinery and energy power, Tianjin International Joint Research Center for Low-carbon and Green Process Equipment and International Joint Research Center of Tianjin Modern Automobile Safety Technology; Intelligent Light industry equipment manufacturing, big data and intelligent vehicle were selected in the characteristic discipline group of Tianjin university service industry, and won more than 10 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards in recent five years.

There are 6 undergraduate majors in Mechanical and Electronic Engineering, Process Equipment and Control Engineering, Industrial Design, Mechanical Design and Manufacturing and Automation, Vehicle Engineering, and Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering. Among them, the major of Industrial Design, Process Equipment and Control Engineering is the national first-class undergraduate program, and it has passed the national Engineering Education Certification; Tianjin Mechanical Basic Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center and Tianjin Light Industry Equipment Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, and won nearly 10 provincial and ministerial teaching achievements awards in recent five years. Students have won more than 100 national awards in China International College Students Innovation Competition, "Challenge Cup" and other competitions, and more than 100 approved innovation and entrepreneurship training programs for college students at the provincial and ministerial level.
